middle school
How long is the school day?
School starts at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. The school day ends at 1:30 on Fridays.
When does the school year start and end?
Usually, we start in mid August and finish the year in late May.
Does your school calendar follow the WS/FC school calendar?
No. Calvary sets its own calendar. Often, our holiday schedule will be
similar to that of the public schools.
What is the dress code? Do the students wear uniforms?
The goal of our dress code is to help students choose appropriate clothing
for the purposes of Christian education.
All dress is to be modest, neat and clean. We do not currently use uniforms.
Students in middle school and high school
may wear KNEE LENGTH shorts as well as jeans that are clean and neat.
In addition, girls may wear KNEE LENGTH dresses or
skirts. The following styles are not appropriate for school wear:
nylon athletic style shorts, halter tops, tank tops,
short skirts, sleeveless tops, leggings, or clothing with inappropriate logos.
Hairstyles should reflect the school
culture and should be clean and neatly maintained. Boys should have haircuts
above the eyebrows, mid-ear or above, and
above a standard shirt collar. Exotic body piercing is not acceptable for
Calvary students. Earrings for boys are
prohibited at school and school-related activities. In addition, symbols
which have secular and/or occult meaning may
not be worn on clothes or as accessories.
What is your discipline plan?
Calvary Baptist Day School Students Are:
Respectful | Responsible | Cooperative
Discipline is the process of teaching and training students in expected
behaviors. Calvary Baptist Day School
operates a school-wide discipline plan. Under this plan, teachers diligently,
consistently, fairly, and lovingly explain
and train students in expected behaviors and then hold them accountable.
No student has the right to behave in a manner
that disrupts or interferes with the teacher's right to teach or another
child's right to learn. Grace and mercy are
granted when a student demonstrates a repentant heart and change in behavior.
Students at CBDS will:
- Demonstrate respect for those in authority.
- Demonstrate appreciation and respect for other students.
- Obey all school-wide academic and discipline policies including the dress code.
- Come to school on time and prepared to learn.
- Complete all assignments on time.
Are your teachers certified and/or licensed to teach?
Teachers in middle school are either fully licensed or have been licensed
in the past and are in the process of
renewing their license to teach in North Carolina. Teachers are also
licensed by the Association of Christian Schools
International (ACSI).
What is your student to teacher ratio?
Our usual maximum number of students in each class section in middle school is 24.
What curriculum do you use?
The biblically integrated curriculum used at each grade level at Calvary
has been written by Calvary teachers.
Textbooks are selected from both Christian and secular publishers based on how
well they fit the curriculum that we have
developed. Currently we are using texts from a variety of publishers.
- Sixth graders are on an 8 period schedule with three teachers covering the subjects of Bible, reading, language, science, social studies and math. Specialists teach physical education, art, music, Spanish and computer.
- Seventh and eighth graders are on an 8 period day. In addition to the regular academic courses (Bible, Communication Skills, Math, Social Studies, Science) seventh grade students also take Physical Education, Art, and Computer and choose electives: Spanish, Band, Chorus and Drama. Eight grade students have additional elective choices such as Newspaper, Culinary Arts, Math Team and Dramatic Arts.
Do you have a cafeteria?
Yes. We have a cafeteria which serves lunch each day.
All students eat in the cafeteria (whether they bring or buy).
Current lunch cost is $3.50 for grades 4 through 12.
What about before and after school care?
Calvary Baptist Day School operates an extended care program from 7:15 a.m.
to the start of school and from the
end of school in the afternoon until 5:30 p.m. Rates are $2.00 per day for the
morning and $5.75 per day for the afternoon. If the student uses the extended care
program both a.m and p.m. every school day, there is a flat fee of $125.00 per month.
PLEASE NOTE that extended care operates ONLY on regular school days.
Care is not provided when school is closed. The extended care program is
available in the mornings for children in full and half day kindergarten through eighth grade. Afternoon care is available for full day kindergarten through eighth grade.
Is Calvary Baptist Day School accredited?
Yes, Calvary Baptist Day School is accredited by the Association of Christian
Schools International (ACSI)
and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
Can Middle School students play sports?
Yes. There are Middle School try out teams selected in girls' and boys' soccer;
girls' and boys' basketball;
girls' volleyball; boys' baseball, and cheerleading. Seventh and eighth grade
students are permitted to try out for
tennis, swimming, cross country and golf teams at the varsity level.
(All teams are subject to having enough players
to make a team and subject to having a qualified coach.)
What about other extra-curricular activities?
CBDS is continuously seeking ways to try to meet the interest of our
middle school students through athletic
and non-athletic activities. Middle School students have opportunities to
compete in school-wide, regional, and state
competitions in areas such as National Geography Bee, spelling bees, math
and art competitions. Students may become
involved in Student Council by being elected by their classmates to
offices during the Student Council elections.
Students may volunteer to help with service projects sponsored by the school.
Opportunities for participation in drama
and musical performances are offered through the school music and chapel programs.
We also have a chapter of the National
Junior Beta Club, an honor club for high achieving students and Junior National
Forensic League. Other clubs this year
include Art Club, Crafts Club and Fitness Club.
You mentioned chapel . . .
CBDS students have a weekly chapel program. The age levels of the chapels
vary from week to week. Usually, there
are two chapel programs each week: one each in elementary and secondary school.
Parents are always welcome to attend
chapel services.
How do your test scores compare with the public school End of Grade Tests?
Private schools in North Carolina are required to give standardized tests
which are nationally normed. The NC End
of Grade Tests are only normed or made standard for students in NC, therefore
do not meet the private school requirement
for a nationally standardized test. We give the Stanford Achievement Test
in grades 3-11 each year. School-wide, our
scores average between the 85th and 90th percentiles.
How do I enroll my middle school son or daughter?
Students who qualify may enroll any time during the school year.
Please contact the CBDS Admission Office at
336-714-5479 for further details.
Do you have scholarships or financial assistance?
Need-based financial assistance is available for grades early
education through twelve.
There is a formal application process (with a processing fee) which must be
completed. Families may complete a
financial assistance application available at the Headmasters office,
or may apply online at:
www.ffna1.com.
(CBDS code # is 2105). Although the financial aid application may be
submitted at any time, the ideal time is early
spring for the following school year. Calvary Baptist Day School
DOES NOT AWARD ANY ATHLETIC OR ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS.
